There are people that will deny established definitions of the words that they use in order to uphold a belief or make a point. Words are not defined with beliefs, opinions or theories. The definition of a word is academically and socially established after it is coined. Over time words are or can be redefined. We all know this but for example, there are people that will ask you to “define reality” or “define life”. If you point them to the established definitions of the words using a dictionary (which is a reference book, not fiction) there are people that will reject the definitions and state things like, “well, that’s not my definition” or “definitions don’t matter”. Really? That is called denying or rejecting reality in order to uphold a belief. If you have to lie or dismiss reality in order to make a point, that makes your point invalid. Analysis of anything does not include overlooking or discounting reality…or the very real definitions of the words you choose to use. Established languages have established words with established definitions. If you ask somebody to define a word and they use something other than the established definition, then what they are defining is not the word in question. If you have to lie to make your point, that makes your point invalid.
Person 1 Question: “What is your definition of reality?”
Person 2 Answer: Here is the definition of reality (merriam-webster link).
Person 1 Reply: “That is not what reality is!”
Person 2 Reply: “Then you are not asking me about reality. You are asking me to define something else that you believe to be your reality.”
